Through genetic testing and newborn screening at UW–Madison, rare genetic mutations in Wisconsin’s Amish and Old Order Mennonite populations can be diagnosed and treated, improving the lives of many struggling with debilitating symptoms and shorter lifespans. Funded by grants from the Wisconsin Partnership Program, clinicians from the School of Medicine and Public Health work with La Farge physician James DeLine on an innovative and community-engaged approach to research and care that combines home visits with cutting-edge genetics testing. The team’s medical expertise, commitment to trust-building and cultural sensitivity allows families within Wisconsin’s Plain communities to receive vital, life-saving care.
